Road Trip

...didn't go as well as I had hoped. Leon was fussy on the way there. I don't know if his feet were hurting because of his shoes or if he was just tired. Once we got to our first stop, he was really good. Laughing, playing etc. just like he normally does at home. Then, he fell asleep on the way to meet my friend for lunch and slept about 10 minutes while we were there. Then he slept on the way to our next stop and about the first 15 minutes we were there as well. He was great playing like he was the first time. Then on the way home he slept fine. I stopped at Target to get some more nipples for his bottles that he seems to get more milk out of and he screamed the whole way home. (This isn't really far though...just a couple minutes down the road) Then we were getting ready to go out for dinner with Skip's family and he screamed the whole way there and fell asleep on the way inside. He was great through dinner and then screamed and cried himself to sleep on the way home. Once we got home, he never woke up until 5:00 this morning. He got up and ate about 5 ounces which was good. Then it's been downhill since then as far as his eating goes and it's 1 of 3 things that I can think of. 1. I gave him cereal around 11:30 and that is holding him over VERY nicely. 2. he doesn't have his appetite back from being sick last week because I don't have mine back after getting what he had. 3. His teeth are still bothering him for some reason. It could be a combination of 1 and 2, but then who knows. I gave him some Tylenol and that didn't help in this last feeding I tried. He starts to eat and then turns away and cries...it's like he's full but he hasn't hardly ate anything. I just don't get it. I know there are days that he'll do that and maybe he just isn't hungry, but it is starting to really get on my nerves. Other than eating, he is perfectly normal. I know I still haven't ate hardly anything yet so it wouldn't surprise me if that is what his problem is. As long as he's staying hydrated, I'm not as worried about it, but he still needs to eat his formula. He does excellent in the morning and then it slowly tapers off and goes downhill from there. He never spits up or anything so he's keeping everything down..just doesn't want the bottle much. He ate 5 ounces, then 4 hours later he ate about 3-4, then 2 hours later I gave him some cereal and 3 ounces. He took a nap, woke up and was crying like he was hungry...so I tried to feed him and he only ate 1 ounce. Then a couple hours later he was crying again like he was hungry and he only ate about 1-2. In about an hour I'm going to try some more cereal and see how that goes. He's fine...other than his eating, but I think it's mainly because of him being sick last week. He's still tired even though he's taken a 2 1/2 hour nap and a 3 hour nap today...maybe it's a growth spurt too...who knows. Hopefully tonight goes well as far as sleep goes...we'll see!!

Hey Crystal! I found your blog from Jennifer's page. Congratulations on little Leon! He is SUCH a cutie!! I have a 14 month old little girl now.
I read your "Cereal" blog too and I went through the same thing when I first started feeding cereal to Ellie (my daughter). I was wondering if you mix Leon's cereal with water or his formula. Mixing with formula usually worked better for me because it tasted better and it also ensured that Ellie got more of her required amount of formula. If I remember right, a baby needs 2 to 2 1/2 ozs of formula per pound of body weight daily, not to exceed 32 ozs. So a 14 pound baby would need 28 to 32 ozs of formula daily to fulfill all his nutritional requirements. Ellie's doctor told us, that if we were having problems getting Ellie to take her daily required amount of formula, then to just lay off of the cereal for a week or longer until she gets back on schedule. She said the formula was more important and had everything she needed (as long it was a formula with iron). Until around 6 months, feeding cereal is just practice for a baby to help them get used to eating and to the different textures of food. They don't actually need it yet, so if you're having problems with Leon getting enough formula, then you might just try holding off a little longer on feeding the cereal. And then mixing it with his formula when you try again. Once he's back up to 28 to 32 ozs then you’re free to try more solids again.
So, that's what the doctor told me and it made feel better about the whole thing. I didn't feel like I was constantly struggling just to feed my baby (something she didn't even need yet anyways!) and I was able to relax a little more and just concentrate on getting the formula in her. I did, however, keep feeding just a little rice right after the bedtime bottle because I really did feel it helped her sleep longer and I couldn't give that up! :) Well, hope I was able to help a little! I have been there, and I feel for you. Good luck!

We do use formula to mix with his cereal. He's actually getting better. I think part of his problem was he was starting to get sick when he didn't want to eat it. They changed his formula today. You live so close to me too. We are probably only like 15 minutes away from each other. Email me sometime. crystal118@hotmail.com I'd love to email you. I've never heard an actual amount of formula from the doctor that he should get, but she said he was ready to start cereal but start it slowly and then baby food at 5 months which is Friday. I'm going to wait until he's eating the cereal decent though especially since they just changed his formula again. It's the third kind he's been on...plus some attempts at breast feeding at first, but that dind't work out.
