Long day with doctors
Noah was able to get scheduled for a swallow study at 2:30 this afternoon. He of course refused the bottle there, like he has been at home. At least he didn't take it while we were there...which I wish he would have, but there's nothing I can do now I guess. They did however try some baby food to make sure he isn't aspirating again. He did wonderful with the baby food, but they couldn't get a conclusive result with the bottle. He weighed in at 14.99 lbs and was 26 inches long. He gaining weight, and I have NO idea how he is doing it. The doctor is worried obviously that he isn't gaining enough weight, and that he isn't taking enough fluids a day...which was why I've been nagging the doctor in the first place. I personally think it has something to do with his reflux, and the developmental pediatrician said he thinks it is either that, or aspiration. I don't agree with the aspiration though. If it's not reflux, I think it's something more major than what we thought we'd ever see. So, the doctor has changed his formula to Progestimil...which he will NOT take! It smells like crap, and I'm sure it tastes like it too! He changed his formula to that, and put him on a 27 calorie per ounce with the formula and wants me to get a minimum of 24 oz a day in him...I have NO clue how I'm going to do that, but we will see how well we do tomorrow I guess since we didn't get home until 6 tonight from the doctor. He has also put him back on the Zantac, along with the Prevacid. He said sometimes when babies lay down for bed, the acid comes up and irritates their throat making them not want to eat all day. I have to call his pediatrician tomorrow to get his appointment for the GI doctor. The GI doctor will use a scope to look at his stomach to see if it is in fact acid reflux and see how bad the damage is and if he needs to be put on something else, something stronger...etc. The developmental peds dr thinks he is going to have to have a G-tube put in because of him not wanting a bottle. The GI doctor will give us a second opinion on that to see if he thinks it's necessary or not. If we have to go that route, I guess we don't have a choice...he's got to get fluids in him somehow. I told him that I want to do everything else possible before doing that. I will have whatever test ran I can to rule out as many things as we can before we do the surgery. I couldn't get him to take the new formula at all today after we got home. I gave him the Zantac when we got home and he took it and then wouldn't touch the bottle. We ate dinner, ran to the store and came home and he still wouldn't touch the bottle. I made a bottle of his old formula and he took almost 4 oz...a record for today! In the morning, I mixed 4 oz of his old formula and 2 oz of the new formula. Maybe I can wean him on it or something...but who knows. I know it's VERY expensive, and Walmart or Meijer don't carry it so I don't know where I'm going to get it, but they gave me 4 cans at the doctor so I'm good for a while. I'm hoping and praying that it's just acid reflux and he wakes up a brand new baby tomorrow. I do not want him to go through another surgery or anything anytime soon. He did say he'd only have to be on the g-tube until he learned to drink from a sippy cup...so guess what we will be practicing with starting tomorrow! I really hope this will end up being an easy fix for him, but in the end...I know that the g-tube is a good possibility too...I'm praying it's acid reflux...keep your fingers crossed for us! They said we should be able to get in to the GI dr this week...more to come later.
